I’m It
It is decision time and he’ll pick me because I am the best choice, have been for years. Hard to believe it’s been that long. Hard to believe I’ve served with him for over three years. I remember the interview like it was yesterday. Apparently, I was going to be a replacement for one who had not been up to the tasks required in this job.
Questions … oh the questions, did anyone have experience with me? Yes, I am cut from the same mold as others who’ve had very successful careers.
Could I do different things? Naturally, to a certain level I could. I have big plans for myself, just give me a chance.
Was I trainable? Trainable, what did he mean by that? Look at me, I’m a specialist, you pick me because I am the exact right fit, best tool in the box if you will.
In the end I was it, I was the right choice for the position. I received a prominent place in the office; after all he is the man. I was there for all the important meetings, the conference calls, the late nights – thankfully there were not too many of those. During it all, nobody ever asked why I was there. They could tell by how he positioned me just how important I was to him. I don’t think he always needed me to be there, I just think it made him feel more comfortable knowing he could reach out to me whenever he wanted.
I’ve seen it all too. The frustration, euphoria, rejection, celebration, and that was just his divorce. He’s in sales; all his days are that way.
And He keeps strange hours. I think it’s because he has a busy mind. I can tell by the things he has me work on. One minute it’s something for clients, the next minute it’s a personal matter. It could be two in the afternoon or two in the morning, there is no telling when he’ll need me.
I enjoy the personal stuff the best – he’s very eclectic. Boy Scouts, Trains, Stamps … oh, and the triathlon training too. Thank goodness I just have to help organize for that one. I couldn’t imagine having to keep up with him.
I’m not complaining, so you know. I have a very rewarding position; I get to work on many different types of projects and I get immediate feedback. He’s good about that, letting me know right away that I delivered another “good job.”
I have competition at times and I’m okay with it. Competition makes us better. My competitors know their weaknesses, as does he. Scotch is even more of a specialist than me. He might go a whole month without getting a new assignment, his work is very seasonal. Gem and I are interchangeable on some projects. But if you want to be sure everything stays in the right place, then I’m it.
You could say I’m the glue that holds this place together. Well, I’m not actually the glue, the glue is the glue. I’m the stapler.
